Anyone remember the name Theophilus Eugene Connor? Not many do of course, you’d have to ask John Lewis to get a real sense of who ‘Bull’ Connor was back in the 60s, or just stare at the scar on his skull put there by one of Bull Connor’s henchman who fractured his skull with a billy club.
Old Bull was a Dixiecrat in Birmingham Alabamy. He didn’t take kindly to the federal gubmint telling him to integrate with black people, only he called them what a traditional klansman would call them. He had so much contempt for the idea of integration that he closed 23 parks in Birmingham rather than allow black people to use them.
When the Freedom Riders left New Orleans in 1961 for Alabama, Bull thought he’d give them a preview of what was to come. There was a prominent black minister who owned a large house in Birmingham and one night he was hosting three other black ministers who were sponsors of the Freedom Riders. Bull was in charge of public safety so he sent a gang of police officers over the Minister Fred Shuttlesworth’s home to arrest everyone there for vagrancy.
When the Freedom Riders reached Birmingham’s bus station, klansman were waiting on them. They clobbered black people with metal pipes and bats. Then they set the buses ablaze. By…
